September Meeting

9/9/2018

For the Society's next meeting on September 23rd, we are doing something a bit different: rather than discussing a work as per usual, we will be discussing our Society itself. This will be, as it were, a "business meeting" of the Society, to discuss the results of our Member Survey and the future and the organizational structure of our little group.

UPDATE: The results are in! Download a report of the Survey data here.

Questions to be addressed include:
  • Electing officers to manage the Society.
  • Planning more "public" events and varying the content of our gatherings.
  • Establishing a planning committee for a local conference and/or hosting the national conference.
  • Aiding the national Society's work and the Cause of GKC.
  • And more!

NOTE: Even though this is a "business meeting," new members (as always) are very much welcome! [Indeed, new perspectives would be particularly helpful given the focus of this meeting!]

Please RSVP for the September meeting at the bottom of this post.

Activity: Alignment Chart

We may have some new people at September's meeting, or just our old friends: in any case, in order to liven things up for a "business meeting" such as this and to "break the ice" so to speak, members are also invited to do a little activity that could be fun: fill out a Chestertonian-themed "alignment chart."

If you're not familiar with alignment charts, here is a little article about them. These are popular memes, and we will share the best ones our own members come up with on our social media accounts. For our purposes, members can do an alignment of (a) characters in Chesterton's works, (b) biographical characters Chesterton wrote about (past and contemporary), (c) authors in Chesterton's circle, either immediate or removed by a degree (e.g., Belloc in the first case, C. S. Lewis in the second, etc.) or any other grouping that strikes a member as Chestertonian!

If you're still perplexed, here is an alignment of Disney characters as an example of the form from the web:

Next Reading: You Can Begin Now

In the meantime, since we aren't reading an assignment for September, you may want to get an early start on October's book. For our meeting in October (exact date TBD), we will be reading a work that is timely in two senses: both for the time of year, and also as a continuation of the discussion from our August meeting about the Inklings. The work is by one of Tolkien's and Lewis's friends, Charles Williams, perhaps the oddest of the Inklings. We'll be reading his spooky novel, All Hallows' Eve.

You can obtain a copy of the work at this link in various formats (Hardcover, Paperback, e-book).
