Join the Society on Sunday evening, June 23rd, to discuss the first part (chapters 1-8) of GKC's Autobiography, the penultimate publication of the author's lifetime (a book of essays, unfortunately out of print, entitled "As I was Saying," takes the final spot). Please see below to RSVP for this meeting. The book is a treat; if you haven't read it before, the first sentence should be sufficient to whet your appetite: "Bowing down in blind credulity, as is my custom, before mere authority and the tradition of the elders, superstitiously swallowing a story I could not test at the time by experiment or private judgment, I am firmly of opinion that I was born on the 29th of May, 1874, on Campden Hill, Kensington; and baptised according to the formularies of the Church of England in the little church of St. George opposite the large Waterworks Tower that dominated that ridge." You can purchase the book online in various formats; if you want a physical copy, we'd urge you to pick one up from the Society of Gilbert Keith Chesterton.

Join the Society for our next monthly meeting where we discuss The Ballad of the White Horse, Chesterton's wonderful poem about a 9th century historical battle and the larger cosmic battle it represented. You can find the poem online, but you may want to purchase a nice annotated edition from the American Chesterton Society. The Society also sells a digital download audio recording of the poem as read by the eminent Chesterton, Mr. Aidan Mackey. A final option is this other audio recording which you can get for free, recommended by our very own Mike K., a reading by Malcom Guite. In any case, you have plenty of options to get ready for the meeting which is right around the corner! The Society will meet again in February to discuss Chesterton's On G.F. Watts. We wanted to announce this book right away so that people have time to procure and read it! The book is available online and in various formats, but we'd encourage anyone who can to purchase directly from the American Chesterton Society. The edition has some added perks - apart from being able to support the Society with the purchase! Here is the description from the website: "A beautiful new book published by the Watts Gallery in England", this edition "[i]ncludes the full text of Chesterton’s 1904 monograph on Watts, plus several previously uncollected essays by Chesterton on this exquisite artist. 8 full-color plates. Foreword by Mark Bills, Curator of the Watts Gallery." Pick up your copy today and begin reading, and we will see you on Sunday, February 17, 2019 to discuss this fascinating work! Please RSVP for this meeting below.
This December - on Friday, Dec. 21st at 7:00 PM at Ivy Hall - join us as we discuss one of Chesterton's favorite writers and his classic Christmas tales: we will be discussing Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and The Cricket on the Hearth. You can find both books online at Project Gutenberg: click here for A Christmas Carol and click here for The Cricket on the Hearth. You can access another, slightly more readable version of A Christmas Carol here as well. Also, as promised at the November meeting, I'm including a link to a paper I wrote on Dickens' Christmas works: click here to download. Please note: I recommend you read the books before reading the paper, if you are interested in the paper. It depends on the content of the works. See below to RSVP. We hope you'll join us in December for this great discussion of a wonderful seasonal classic and its lesser-known companion work! For the Society's monthly meeting on August 12, 2018, we will be discussing a theme rather than a particular work: the theme being mythology as it is approached in the thinking of George MacDonald, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, and J. R. R. Tolkien. Come join us for a great discussion! There will be a reading packet for this meeting, but we are not posting it online. In order to obtain the reading packet, please e-mail us a request by clicking below. Note, you don't need to RSVP for this meeting: reading packet requests will be taken as RSVPs. If you want the packet but cannot attend the meeting, please note that in the email request. You might also want to watch this video by Chestertonian Kevin O'Brien, originally aired on EWTN, as it discusses some of the themes for our meeting: |
